Winter Solstice 2022
To honor the turn of the wheel from the dark half to the light, we gathered in a private home in North Salt Lake wearing pajamas and our coziest winter socks. Our evening began as we snuggled in for a discussion on the contrast with modern commercialism and the restful, introverted vibe of the solstice season. The conversation was wrapped in themes of rejuvenation, introspection, hibernation, and insulation.
We moved to the kitchen for a feast of soups, breads, and salads. Our candle-lit time meal was peppered with laughter and connection. Afterwards, Alisa taught a quick lesson on the significance of Solstice traditions before we donned our boots and coats to head outside.
In the backyard was a carefully crafted spiral labyrinth walk, lit by candles and lined with evergreen branches. Each person was given an unlit candle as they entered the labyrinth. When they arrived at the center, they lit their candle from the flame of those already burning before then placing their lit candle along the path of the spiral to light the way for others traveling through. This small ritual was intended to help us turn over our own “dark” we carried, and welcome a new beginning with the return of the sun. Each person quietly moved through the Solstice Spiral as the group sang “Round and Round” to accompany their walking meditation.
When the spiral was completely lit with our candles and intentions, we gathered once more inside for a seasonal song session. With carefully chosen selections which honored the land, season, and the transition of the sun, we sang among the candles. Our evening finished with a lighthearted cookie and tea exchange. Everyone took a lovely collection of songs, treats, and friendships with them as they traveled home and settled in for a long winter’s nap.
