Shared Agreements

Shared agreements function as expressions of foundational approaches meant to serve the community as a whole. Members attending classes and gatherings take these agreements to heart during their time at Nourishing Kin. This allows us to effectively co-create an environment conducive to diaspora work and authentic community connection.

Embrace discomfort + delight

Re-connection with Land, Ancestors, and Community requires us to face difficult topics (colonization, culture loss, accountability, and stigma) and activating feelings (shame, grief, rage, and frustration) head-on. We do not shy away from this work in our classes and gatherings, for we know that on the other side of discomfort lies the joy and delight of authentic connection and belonging.

Hold boundaries sacred - including yours

You know better than anyone what you need and what feels good to you moment-to-moment. We rely on community members to know, express, and tend to their individual needs. This means that you have permission to opt-out of any activity or participate at your desired level. It also means that we hope you will use our space to practice expressing boundaries and ask for support when needed!

De-center LDS church affiliation

Our organization is based in a region with historical ties to and strong cultural influence of the LDS (Mormon) church. This means that church affiliation often dictates the quality of interpersonal relationships. Nourishing Kin community members span the spectrum of faith - from active, progressive, deconstructed, and non-affiliated - and we encourage members to find their way to each other regardless of church affiliation. While topics of deconstruction and holding the church accountable for historical harms are present in Nourishing Kin, it is not a space dedicated to actively deconstructing religion. If you are in need of a community to support you through that process, we are very happy to refer you to organizations doing that work.
