Cultural Appropriation: A Closer Look
In this course, participants are introduced to helpful foundational concepts for understanding culture and cultural development. The course continues to build on this foundation to provide appreciation for culture as a reflection of relationships of care and devotion to land and community. Then, participants are supported in learning about culture loss and the impacts this has on descendants of Europeans, especially those whose ancestors immigrated and settled in North America. Our primary focus in class was creating awareness around the grief of culture loss for descendants of Europeans, and holding space for the ways this grief directly contributes to cultural appropriation. The course then explores paths out of appropriative practices and directs the desire to belong toward authentic connections.
